Background & Objectives: Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Inflammation is one of the components of metabolic syndrome and many inflammatory cytokines play a critical role in this disease. The aim of this study was to investigate correlation between seborrheic dermatitis and metabolic syndrome.
Materials & Methods: In this case- control study 39 seborrheic dermatitis patients who referred to Sina Hospital of Hamadan as case group and 39 age and sex matched healthy individuals as control group were compared in terms of metabolic syndrome. Statistical analysis was performed using version 16.0 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL).
Results: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels in the patient group were statistically significantly lower than in the controls (in women P=0.046 and in men P=0.044). Mean of triglyceride, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein(LDL), fasting blood glucose (FBS), systolic and diastolic blood pressure and waist circumference in case group were more than in control group but just systolic blood pressure and waist circumference were statistically significant (P<0.05). In case group 20.5% and in control group 7.7% were afflicted metabolic syndrome which was not statistically significant (P=0.104).
Conclusion: Some significant parameters of metabolic syndrome in seborrheic dermatitis patients may be a predictive factor for screening.
