The aim of this study was to examine correlation between serum levels of Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) and Cyfra 21-1 with telomerase activity on biopsy samples in patients with lung cancer and controls. Materials & Methods: We studied 50 malignant lung cancer patients (mean age 68.3±13.8 years) and 20 normal individuals (mean age 64.9±11.4 years). Serum levels of Cyfra21-1 and CEA were measured with available enzyme immunoassay kits. Telomerase activity was measured by TRAP assay based on PCR-ELISA in lung tumor biopsy. To compare quantitative means of the two groups, t-independent and Man-Whitney analysis were applied. Results: The mean serum levels of CEA and Cyfra21-1 concentration together telomerase activity of biopsy samples in lung cancer patients were significantly higher than controls. There were a strong correlation between Cyfra21-1 and CEA, Telomerase and CEA and Telomerase and Cyfra21-1 in patient group. In patients with small cell carcinoma, the mean serum levels of Cyfra21-1 and CEA were significantly higher than non small cell carcinoma patients. Telomerase activities in biopsy samples of small cell carcinoma were significantly lower than non small cell carcinoma patients. Conclusion: It is speculated that based on this findings, telomerase activity in biopsy samples for small cell carcinoma patients and serum levels of Cyfra 21-1 and CEA are the most useful tumor markers for diagnosis of squamous and adenocarcinoma of non small cell cancers respectively. }, URL = {http://sjh.umsha.ac.ir/article-1-353-en.html}, eprint = {http://sjh.umsha.ac.ir/article-1-353-en.pdf}, journal = {Avicenna Journal of Clinical Medicine}, doi = {}, year = {2008} }
