The purpose of this research was to obtain accurate information of the psycho – social factors of the 1029 people who attempted suicide in Hamadan.

During 1994-1995, 1029 individuals who had been brought to 4 emergency centers in Hamadan for attempting suicide completed the personal data sheet, MMPI and BDI.

The finding indicated that 36.54% of this group (376 persons) were males and 63.45% (635 persons) were female. Those under the age of 30, attempted suicide more than other age groups (78.12%). The majority of females who attempted suicide  were married (63.85%), where as among males this percent was  41.37% . 82.72% of subjects who completed BDI were depressed. 57.05% of subjects had an abnormal profile MMPI.

Family and marital discordance, mental disorders (mostly depression) and unemployment were the main reasons for suicide among this group.
