Among intestinal parasite infections, helminths, specially hookworms Necator amercanus and Ancylostoma duodenale which cause many problems are of special importance. Among problems, anemia which is iron deficiency type is the most important problem in infected regions. This type  of anemia is related to many factors including daily iron intake, body store of iron intensity duration if infections and species of the parasites.

Although hemoglobin determination is of value in determining the anemia, but can not show the iron status the body.

The studies in infected regions of the world including Iran, show latent problem due to these parasites which can be determined by biochemical examination of serum. The studies in Iran show that the most important problem due to hookworms is iron deficiency anemia which in many cases are in the form of latent iron deficiency. These studies show that a national program of control for these parasites in both south & north of Iran is needed.
