Background and Objective: Engaging in cardiac rehabilitation programs after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) can positively influence patients’ return to daily life and work ability. This study aims to assess the impact of participation in a cardiac rehabilitation program on work ability in post-CABG patients, compared to a control group, at Farshchian Heart Hospital in Hamadan, Iran.
Materials and Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, two groups of patients post-CABG were selected: those paritcipating in a rehabilitation program and those not participating in any rehabilitation program, with 36 individuals in each group. An 8-week rehabilitation program was implemented for the intervention group. Three months later, work ability was assessed using a validated questionnaire in both groups.
Results: The two study groups showed no statistically significant differences regarding age, gender, and chronic comorbidities (P>0.05). The total final score of work ability was significantly higher in the rehabilitation group by 32.8 units compared to the control group (P<0.001). Work ability in the good category was approximately 42% higher in the rehabilitation group than in the control group (P<0.001).
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that participation in the cardiac rehabilitation programs can positively affect work ability in patients three months after CABG.
